What’s the difference between nylon and polyester?

When choosing a carpet, an essential part of the decision is the fibers. Nylon and polyester are two of the most popular fibers selected, and one of the questions we always get is: What’s the difference between the two? At The Flooring Center +, we want to answer that question today. Carpeting is one of the most significant investments you make in your home, and we want you to be fully informed when making that decision.

Nylon vs. Polyester

Nylon is resilient. It has an ultra-strength to it, meaning you can step on it, and it will pop back into its original shape. Polyester is hydrophobic. This means that it won't absorb liquid, which gives it superior stain resistance. Nylon is more absorbent; however, like most carpet fibers, it is treated with a stain-resistant chemical that makes it stain-resistant. Nylon and polyester can be soft to the touch. Nylon is a bit pricier than polyester.

In comparison

Remember that each fiber has strengths to it and different quality levels. So you want to make sure that these qualities even out in the comparison. For example, if you have a high-performing quality polyester, it might be better than low-performing nylon when it comes to durability.

There are also sub-versions and sub-categories of carpet. For example, nylon has a solution-dyed version, where the dye goes through the manufacturing process instead of after it. When it is solution-dyed, there are no dye lots on which a stain can attach itself, thus increasing the stain resistance and fading. Polyester is made of recycled materials and plastic drinking bottles, which may be necessary for an environmentally-conscious consumer.
