How to shop for laminate flooring

Laminate flooring is an affordable, realistic, and highly stylish alternative to natural wood floors. The wood look floors come in oak, walnut, hickory, and maple, etc., and have grain patterns so true-to-life that you'll feel as though you can touch them. In addition, laminate is ultra-durable, low maintenance, and has easy installation.

There’s now a waterproof laminate flooring

Unique construction with materials such as the high-density fiberboard (HDF) core eliminates spills absorbing and staining concerns. This allows it to be installed in all rooms, including higher-than-normal moisture spaces. Be sure to specify your version of choice to the flooring expert.

The importance of thickness

The best laminate flooring has a thickness of 10-mm to 12-mm. Although it comes in a range of densities, a more robust surface is more durable, hides subfloor imperfections, is quiet, and provides more design options. Especially if you are deciding on a wood look, you'll want that authentic hardwood feeling of a thicker surface.

What is laminate flooring?

This flooring consists of four layers fused to make one entity. At the bottom is the underlayment, providing stability and foundation. Next is the core, and following that is the design layer. At the very top is a transparent, robust, and aluminum oxide coating that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs.

Image is everything

The images are taken with digital photography, so they're clear and vibrant, with knots, grains, swirls, and rings in full display. If you prefer, you can also get stone and tile mimics cut into groutable squares, with veining variations and ceramic tile pieces that feature vibrant patterns including chevrons, herringbones, encaustic styles, and filigrees.

The floors have a micro bevel and are embossed for depth, dimension, and textured features such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. The material can be cut into planks to mimic hardwood boards or groutable squares for tile and stone. Many feel the extra seams add to the realism.
